Finding it hard to meet like-minded people in South Africa? Whether it’s because you have different interests, don’t like the local hangouts or another reason altogether, DatingSA.com hopes to help you find a date near you. Whilst its membership is not restricted to South Africa, you will find that the vast majority of its members hail from there, so it’s of best use if you’re interested in finding a date in South Africa rather than the rest of the world.

The site isn’t particularly attractive, although it is somewhat logically designed, with a series of main tabs and subsections allowing you to navigate around quickly. This takes a little getting used to but should cause no real problems. Registering is free and you can build a unique profile, including photos, though we found profiles to be quite lacking in information, and a number of the photos were bad quality.

When performing a search, you are quite limited as you can only really select gender, age range and location, although you can also browse new members, birthday boys and girls, or people who are online. Still, combining all these elements, perhaps even adding things like hobbies, would make for a more efficient system. Meanwhile you can opt to receive matches based on your personal preferences, which cuts out the need for searching through swathes of profile pages.

Chatting is achieved through messages, although these can only be sent and read once you’ve upgraded to a paid account. Full membership to datingSA isn’t free, costing you quite a lot, particularly if you choose to just sign up for one month. There is a 3 day trial for a few dollars, but you cannot purchase this yourself, rather you have to buy it as a gift. Why would you want to buy a gift for someone you don’t know and haven’t spoken to? We’re not sure, but the option is there if you so choose.

Membership numbers depend on where you live. If you’re in South Africa you will have much better luck at finding suitable members than if you live elsewhere. Still, membership numbers aren’t amazing in either situation. Sadly the site is too basic to really warrant any real excitement. You receive matches, but a matching feature is available on many dating sites, and you can add notes or ratings to user profiles. Again this is nothing unique, but at least it’s there. 

It’s hard to get excited about DatingSA, but it might be worth a shot if you live in SouthAfrica and have the money to spend. However, we’d only really recommend subscribing once you’ve checked other dating sites, and potentially only if you’ve found a few people on this one who you think will make the payment worthwhile.
